Good evening, House of Madness lurkers:
If you're like me, and have asked yourself "I wonder what a movie would look like if they combined 'Chucky', 'Annabelle', the robot from "Ex Machina", and that annoying kid from "A.I.", then "M3gan" might just be the corrupted pot of gold at the end of a murderous rainbow for us. With its PG-13 rating however, it could also be a graphic episode of "Sesame Street", where the word of the day is Satan, and is brought to us by the number 666. Perhaps we can meet in the middle, and will witness a murdering doll that refuses to swear, and apologizes for making a gory mess.
The story is about Gemma (Allison Williams), a robotics engineer at a toy company that builds an almost too life-like doll, that not only takes on a personality of its own, but also takes on a charisma with sinister intentions that would most likely make a puppeteer's hand dissolve in terrified beads of sweat. Gemma's niece Cady (Violet McGraw), is the lucky recipient of said doll, as a way to help her cope with the loss of her recently deceased parents in a car crash. Instead of a doll, it sounds to me like Gemma would have been better off practicing her taxidermy skills, and mounting Cady's parents above the fireplace. With all the technological advances humankind has achieved in the last decade alone, this reads less like a far fetched Hollywood tale, and more like a glimpse into what could be coming if we continue to try and make ourselves more irrelevant as a species. Meanwhile, I still can't figure out how to change the date on my watch, and I still refer to my cell phone as 'handheld sorcery'.
"M3gan" hits theatres January 13, 2023.
