Good afternoon, House of Madness residents:
When it comes to certain genres or sub-genres, why does it seem so difficult for us as an audience to receive something of quality, rather than just accepting constant mediocrity? When's the last time you actually saw a decent adaptation of Frankenstein, werewolves, or even a fucking Transformer? There have definitely been renditions of Frankenstein that have been fantastic, and of course there's been some solid werewolf movies to date, but for every decent film there seems to be a dozen in which the creators simply couldn't have been trying too hard. It especially blows my mind when Transformers and Superhero films blow ass, because they have infinite budgets, and the fact that much money churns out a wet sack of kangaroo shit is absolutely baffling. With the amount of money that's been spent on superheroes, I'm sad to say I haven't been impressed once, and my eyes roll to the point of snapping off every time I see a new trailer. When the source material lobs a pitch right over the plate that should light up a director's eyes as he smashes an easy homer out of the ballpark, so often he or she swings and misses, and an elite opportunity is left caked all over home plate.
"Sharks" is the subject of arguably the prime example of what's being discussed above. Of course we were treated to "Jaws", but other than that we've been fed a whole lot of mediocrity or usually even less than that, as is evident in my recent review of "The Black Demon". How the fuck is it seemingly so hard to make a film of something so terrifying? I'll never understand the struggles writers and directors seem to have when it comes to shark movies; you have the perfect monster, why can't we get someone that knows how to capitalize on this to the fullest? Perhaps "Jaws" was just so perfect that nothing else can live up to its legacy, but I think we deserve more. "Sharks" revolves around a scientist that discovers there's a large shark at the bottom of the river, so we're dealing with a mammoth shark while also dealing with one in fresh waters. Hmmm, sounds interesting, but if this is another dud, perhaps it's time we entertained the idea of Superhero Sharks that can transform to fight the Decepticons. If this already exists, so help me God.
Not much is known about "Sharks" just yet, but we all deserve a good shark movie, so hopefully the 432nd time is the charm.
