Good morning, House of Madness believers:
Do you enjoy a film with a lot of tension, or do you......BOO! Did I get you? .....or do you prefer things that lurk in the dark and suddenly jump out at......BOO! What about that time? ......you and make your heart skip eleven beats? When the two methods are done together properly, it can make.....BOO! Surely I got you that time! .....for a very enjoyable horror film, but if the jumps are plentiful and the tension is light, the results are rather bland. BOO!
1956 - France. Things kick off with a priest being murdered in his own church by our old friend in a nun outfit. Word travels back to the Vatican that they have a little bit of an evil epidemic again, and it's headed their way. There's only one person you can call upon in a situation like this, and Sister Irene is initially weary of taking on the task as it almost killed her the first time, but as a servant of the church, she will do as she must. Valak is back, and this time the demon is after a set of ancient eyes, and knows they're located somewhere secret inside a boarding school chapel. As the death toll rises, it's just a matter of time until Valak finds the ocular appendages it seeks, and Sister Irene must stop the demon at all costs if humanity is to stand a chance.
"The Nun 2" isn't terrible, but it's not getting a ringing endorsement from me either. While there are certainly times of tension throughout the film, it's not used nearly enough, and we're left with nothing more than almost two hours of cheesy jump scares. Things lurk in corners, basque in the darkness, and hang by a thread, and each time they come out baring their teeth, we're ready for it as the jumps are plentiful and predictable. Oh well, at least it didn't hint at a third installment, as the Conjuring Universe has become quite crowded, and I'm not sure how much more I can take. BOO!
