The Puppetman (2023)

Good morning, House of Madness residents:

What traits have you inherited from your parents? Do you have your mother's eyes? Perhaps you've been cursed with your father's cleft chin? Definitely nothing wrong with sporting Uncle Ronald's witty sense of humor, that's for sure. These are minor at best, so what if you inherited a demon that your crazy assed parents conjured up when you were born, and have been living with ever since? Yeah, sounds like a fucking blast.

Michal (Alyson Gorske) is the infamous daughter of 'The Puppetman', who slaughtered her mother when she was a child, yet has always claimed his innocence stating "It wasn't me". While 'The Puppetman' awaits his fate on death row, Michal and her friends Danny (Kio Cyr), Charlie (Angel Prater), Jo (Anna Telfer), and Glenn (Cameron Wong) are celebrating reading week at their dorm with some good old fashioned booze and shenanigans. While partying on the roof, Charlie and Michal get into an argument, and soon after, Charlie loses control of all of her extremities and launches herself off of the roof, and plunges to her death. Michal has a sinking feeling she's somehow responsible, and must get answers from her father before his execution in order to stop whatever is happening, and prevent everyone around her from meeting the same fate as Charlie.

"The Puppetman" is a capable enough tale about a girl fighting an inner demon, but the main problem is it just doesn't do anything very well, and in its mediocrity the tale being told is rather dull and lifeless. Hollow characters that we don't care about make ridiculous decisions which leave us scratching our heads, and ultimately wondering what could have been. In a genre overflowing with demons, best to pull the plug on this one, and let it disappear down the drain.
