Good evening, House of Madness critters:
A few months back we learned and spoke about "Unwelcome" here, so please feel free to click the link for a brief synopsis and my initial thoughts on the film.
How often does a film promise to be something you've seemingly been waiting an eternity for, and then proceed to deliver the goods? So many times I've watched a trailer, and been left with anticipated glee as I wait for the full feature to come to light, only to be left with more disappointment than fans after a Milli Vanilli concert. Films frequently promise to be one thing, and then end up being so far from their initial promoted premise, that we're left puzzled and wondering whether the film we just saw was indeed an honest mistake, or if said film indeed led us astray down the often traveled path of tomfoolery. As they say in Hollywood : "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me 7862 times, go fuck yourself!", or something along those lines.
Luckily for us, "Unwelcome" delivers us the unique story promised, and more. In a silly story based around evil goblins, the film ends up being far more clever, funny, and interesting than it had any business being, with my only gripe being how long it took to fully involve the little menacing dwarfs from hell, as the second they make their on-screen presence known, the film instantly becomes more fun and enjoyable. For the first hour or so, we're teased with the existence of these little beings, but are fed a story about a pregnant couple's plight dealing with their first child, a new home, and the most dysfunctional family ever witnessed since 'The Devil's Rejects", posing as a contracting crew. Right when all hope within myself was fading, the little gremlins are finally cut loose, and the real fun begins. I don't want to divulge too much and get a'head' of myself, but I will promise that if you're patient, "Unwelcome" is more than just a little fun.
Madness Meter: 6.7/10
